Crafted for Independent Scoop Shops

It's a bit of a romantic take, but Batch & Scoop believes that behind every scoop at a local creamery is an artisan who operates with love of the craft and a desire to delight customers.

We love that and we're here to help.

What is Batch & Scoop?

Originally started as a hobby project for recipe formulation, Batch & Scoop evolved to include operations tooling for independent scoop shops, gelaterias, and small-batch ice cream makers.

Independent creameries have had to choose between two frustrating extremes: fragile, homegrown spreadsheets where an accidentally broken formula can ruin an entire production run, or expensive, clunky enterprise restaurant software that doesn't understand how frozen desserts are made. Just check out the comparison guide.

Batch & Scoop bridges that gap by helping independent shops with the food science to balance their treats paired with tooling so your shop can be financially healthy and profitable.

The Mission

Ice cream is practically a universal language, spanning generations and cultures. From ice cream in America to kulfi in India; from gelato in Italy to paletas in Mexico; frozen dairy treats provide joy to young and old. Local shops have had to work with suboptimal tools or unwieldy general-purpose software while big chains are able to leverage their scale to build personalized systems that allow them to accelerate their growth. Batch & Scoop aims to help independent shops level the playing field.

Love of Cold Dairy Treats

We've tried variations of ice cream on four different continents now and can confidently say we're still not sick of it.

Getting to experience the diversity of frozen desserts is a real treat. From a tiny shop in an old quarter of Old Delhi to a modern gelateria in the bustling heart of Florence, we've been lucky enough to sample some incredible treats along the way. And that love motivates us to help spread the joy of sweet treats to others by supporting the independent creameries.

Honoring the Craft

There is a deep, rich history to ice cream that spans centuries and continents. From Persia to China to medieval Europe, the art of freezing sweet treats has evolved over time. The Batch & Scoop logo honors that history in America with a nod to the brightly-colored awnings of the ice cream parlors of the mid-20th century and '60s badge emblems.

We built Batch & Scoop because we believe that independent creameries deserve tools that match their dedication and passion for the frozen treat.

"Fair warning, I'm an ice cream addict."

– Warning my then-girlfriend, now wife, 11 years ago.

When I warned her, she thought I was joking. I mean, I kind of was, but it was also in a "Ha ha, okay but seriously..." sort of way. Three years later and she pushed me to channel that into something productive like making ice cream. Eight years after that and I'm here to share that same addiction *passion with others.

For years, my wife promised friends and family we'd throw a home-made ice cream party. That sounded like a lot of work. When we sent invites out and over 30 people RSVP'd, I knew I had to come up with a strategy for making ice cream in a more efficient way. The formulation science was well-understood and I stand on the shoulders of giants in making a calculator.

But planning batches, creating bases, tracking costs, managing inventory? That was an ordeal. My immediate thought was how are shops doing this at scale? I went around to local shops talking to anyone who'd spare some time and I found a patchwork of processes and tools.

Philosophy

For 20 years in my career, I've chosen the fun and interesting problems I'm passionate about over the easy and lucrative ones. That's because I find meaning in the work and because I believe in building things that help others. And that's true for Batch & Scoop too.

As everyday life becomes evermore online, it's important to remember and hold onto the real world experiences and joys. I have a deep appreciation for independent business owners, community, cultures, and the people who make this world a more interesting and delicious place. If my philosophy aligns with yours, I'd love to work together.

Core Principles

The drive and values that guide the work.

Free Formulation

Recipe science should never be gatekept behind expensive subscriptions. The core formulation workbench remains 100% free for passionate makers, home tinkerers, and artisan pastry chefs.

Independent First

We don’t build for corporate megachains. Every feature is built around the real-world daily rhythm of independent scoop shops.

Science Meets Soul

Behind the cold thermodynamics and sugar molecular weights is pure joy. We build tools that make the technical side simple and reliable so you can focus on making flavors people enjoy.
